5 Amazing Things You Can Do With Tiles

Tiles are a great way to redo surfaces, walls, or flooring without breaking the bank. They are easy to install and maintain and can be used in a number of different places throughout your home such as the kitchen or bathroom.

However, when you redo tiles in your kitchen, bathroom or any other room, there tends to be some leftover tiles that just end up laying around until they’re thrown out. Instead of just throwing out your tiles you can repurpose them into something new. So if you happen to have extra tiles and would like to know what else you could do other than bring them to the curb, here are five amazing things you can do with the leftover tiles in your home:

Types of Tiles

Before you go ahead with your DIY project involving tiles, you should get to know which tiles are right for the job. There is a variety of tiles, but here are the ones more commonly used in homes.

Ceramic tiles are one of the more common types of tiles used due to its versatility, durability and easy installation - mostly used in kitchens and bathrooms.

Porcelain tiles another common type of tile, it can be tricky to install and is used to emulate stone, brick or wood - used mostly in kitchens and bathrooms.

Glass tiles are a good alternative to natural stone. They are easy to maintain but chip easily - great for tabletops, around fireplaces, or as a backsplash.

Marble tiles are a little more pricey and are susceptible to scratching, but they add a touch of elegance wherever they are placed - used more for decorative features.

Mosaic tiles come in many different shapes, colours, styles, and materials - also used for decorative features.

It is important to know what tiles work best in what area so you don’t end up installing tiles that would normally just be for decorative purposes in a heavily used area and ruin them. Now that that is out of the way, on to the five amazing things you can do with the leftover tiles in your home!

1. Table Top

If your table could use a new look, try putting ceramic or porcelain tiles on top to give it some style. Putting it together will take nothing more than some glue and weight. This could work for any table, including a side table, kitchen tables or even outdoor tables. It will make maintaining the table a breeze and give you your own one of a kind table!

2. Wall Design

An empty wall can make a room boring and unappealing. Instead of leaving a large white space, take some of your tiles and set them up to make a wall design. Use a level and a pencil to make sure you’re placing them evenly and set up whatever design you can think of. Have a simple large square or rectangle, or place them around another piece of are to accentuate the piece. Glass, mosaic, or marble tiles would be a great choice but any would work.

3. Tiled Window Frame

If your drapes are just not enough style and make you wish your window stood out more, use your excess tiles to make your own window frame. Mosaic tiles would give a beautiful look for your window and it would take one short afternoon and your window will look like it has come from Portugal or Spain.

4. Tiled Bathroom Mirror Frame

Similar to the tiled window frame, this is a great option if you have plenty of room in your bathroom and want to give it a new look. It will improve your bathroom as a whole and make it really stand out. While glass tiles are a great choice (and due to tiles being used all over most bathrooms) any tile would look great and fitting.

5. Backsplash

While seemingly bland compared to the other options, creating a new backsplash could be very convenient and time-saving. Rather than having all of your meals splash onto and possible stain your drywall, tiles are easy to maintain and look much better. If you have a limited amount of tiles, you could apply the backsplash only to the more problem areas. Porcelain or ceramic tiles would be the obvious choice as you won’t be seeing your backsplash a lot and they are easy to maintain.

Here are just some examples of what you could do with tiles other than the obvious flooring and walls. It’s a great cost-effective way to improve your home and give it a new look. So, the next time you do a home project and you have tiles leftover, don’t just get rid of them, use them for a fun DIY project that will up your home look.
